A forklift operator license and a strange-looking plush toy were among the items picked up by volunteers during the Earth Day Trash-Off cleanup hosted by Keep Victoria Beautiful.
A total of 262 volunteers picked up trash at 23 locations around Victoria on Earth Day, April 22. The volunteers collected 203 bags of trash, not including bulky items such as chairs, pallets and abandoned shopping carts.
To encourage volunteers to raise awareness of the cleanup, KVB awarded a prize to the volunteer who got the most likes and shares on a post with the hashtag #KeepVictoriaBeautiful. Ivana Resendiz won the competition, earning a weekend getaway to Rockport.
KVB is also recognizing the volunteers who picked up the most trash and who found some special items along the way:
- Most trash picked up per person: Team 4, a nine-person team led by Kayla Massey, picked up 16 bags of trash on Loop 463 near Malette Drive
- Most unusual item: James Chinowich with Team 1 found a plush toy, believed to be a sheep, on Loop 463 between Navarro Street and John Stockbauer Drive.
- Most interesting find: This category was added after the Republic Energy Services team found a forklift operator license on Bloomington Highway and returned it to its owner.
Other unusual items that were found during the cleanup included socks (Victoria East Interact Club), a set of keys (Hopkins Elementary Student Council) and an oven mitt (Berry Global).
The cleanup was sponsored by Chick-fil-A, The Chopping Block, Del Papa Distributing, H-E-B and The Salvation Army.
Also on Earth Day, the Victoria Police Department hosted a document shredding event in partnership with Prosperity Bank and The Back Office. Residents brought 13,000 pounds of sensitive documents to be securely shredded.
