Nearly 400 student groups, local businesses, congregations and others took part Saturday in cleaning up their community as part of Keep Victoria Beautiful’s third annual citywide Fall Sweep, in partnership with the Texas Department of Transportation.
“This citywide cleanup is a wonderful display of Victoria’s community coming together to make something important happen, and that is keeping Victoria beautiful” said Community Appearance Manager Christy Youker. “Without our volunteers and sponsors, we wouldn’t be able to do this, so we are truly grateful for their efforts.”
A total of about 280 bags of trash, including mattresses, boxes, and more, were picked up by 21 teams of volunteers along TxDOT right of ways. In addition, a river component was included – volunteers picked up waste along Pebble Beach – and a group helped to plant fall gardens at the revitalized Victoria County Community Gardens at Pattie Dodson Health Center, Youker said.
To wrap up the day’s cleanup, a weekend getaway trip to Rockport - donated by a Keep Victoria Beautiful board member - was awarded to team leaders Maxine Sodia and Tangueray Sodia for their social media promotion of the cleanup.
