The City of Victoria is inviting residents to share their suggestions and concerns as the City works to update the section of its code that relates to the care and management of animals within City limits.

The Victoria City Council at its Aug. 17 meeting heard a series of proposed amendments to the City Code’s “Chapter Four: Animals and Fowl.” The proposed changes include:

  • A limit on the number of dogs and cats that can be kept at a residence
  • A reduction of the number of poultry that can be kept at a residence
  • Changes to Animal Control fees and operations
  • Various other changes related to code enforcement, care of outdoor dogs and cats, dangerous dogs, animal-related businesses and rabies prevention

Residents can visit www.victoriatx.gov/animalcode to provide feedback and respond to survey questions related to the proposed amendments. The deadline to respond is 5 p.m. Sept. 17.

Also, the City will host town hall meetings at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, and Thursday, Sept. 16, at the Community Center annex. Residents will be able to share their feedback and hear from Victoria County Animal Control officers and the City prosecutor about the proposed amendments.

At the Aug. 31 City Council meeting, Mayor Jeff Bauknight thanked residents who have already contacted council members to share feedback. These messages will be taken into consideration as the council and City staff decide how to move forward with the amendments.
